Bacon is one of those food that can be very polarizing. I see it all the time when I am promoting and demoing our Coconut Bacon. Some people go as far as being insulted by the notion of such a thing as Coconut Bacon, hence why I cam up with “Vacon” of “V“egan B”acon“. So there you are. It’s not fake bacon anymore.
The truth is it’s more the salt content combined with the smokiness that is highly addictive in traditional bacon. That’s why one of our first goal was to cut down on the unnecessary amount of sodium. So our Vacon has 60% less sodium than normal bacon as a starter. The fat comes from the coconut itself and only that since no oil is added to the product. That fat is in large part the sought after MCT type (medium-chain triglyceride) . You can read more about the 7 science-based benefits of MCT oil here. Last but not least it contains a generous amount of fiber.
Coconut Bacon – The new real thing!
Coconut bacon is made with unsweetened coconut flakes that have been mixed with gluten-free- soy-free coconut aminos ( a great replacement for soy or tamari sauce) and spices and dehydrated a flavor and consistency that’s remarkably like the traditional bacon.
The raw dehydrated coconut flakes retain only a subtle trace of their original flavor—the smoke and spice dominating the conversation instead. It’s not just about flavor, either. Cooked this, the flakes become crispy, mimicking the texture of crispy bacon.
For the plant-based world we thing Coconut bacon should become staple item. Oddly addictive, this bacon crumble-like treat goes well not only salads, but pasta dish, rice dish, pizza, baked potato, nachos wraps etc. It’s packed with flavor and will add crunchyness and flavor to any meal. And, It’s also good by the handful.
